PODCAST: Overcoming Life's Passion Killers

January 24, 2020

We’re at the start of the new year and it’s about that time to look back and ask “what happened to those resolutions?” In this month’s podcast, I’m talking about how to overcome life’s PASSION KILLERS - those things that quench our passion and keep us from fulfilling our goals and resolutions.

2018: I’m Going Back to Analog!

January 17, 2018

If you're finding your goals on life support as well, I believe there are two possible reasons why.  Your problem lies either in the process of SETTING GOALS, or in the process of FOLLOWING UP with your goals.

I’ve written before about how I personally set goals each year.  I have a specific process that I’ve been using for the past 4-5 years and it works great for me.  But what I want to share today is the process I’m using to FOLLOW UP with those goals – which is equally as important and might be the reason you find yourself falling short.

The main change in my 2018 plan is that I’M GOING BACK TO ANALOG!  I’m using a “paper and pen” system to follow up with my goals.

Why I Now Journal Every Day

December 6, 2017

We're coming to the end of another year and if you want to make the coming year special, NOW is the time to start planning for it!  How?  Believe it or not, the key to looking ahead is actually to start by looking back.

I've come to the conclusion that for me, the key to setting effective goals in the new year is to start by evaluating how things went in the prior one.

In other words, I don't start with "where do I want to go in 2018"?  I start with "what happened in 2017?"

Why?  Because you must PROCESS YOUR PAST before PLANNING YOUR FUTURE.

Living in the Moment

January 9, 2017

"Everyone ends up somewhere, but not everywhere ends up somewhere on purpose."

That one thought has always driven me to be very intentional about the way I live my life and the way I approach each new year.

In this week's message, I share about three "turning points" that we all need to make internally if we hope to get the most out of the new year and end up some place on purpose.

Do You Still Remember Your New Year's Resolutions?

January 4, 2017

It’s January 4.  We’re now four days into the new year.  Be honest… have you kept your resolutions for 2017?  Are you still doing what you said you’d be doing?  Did you even start?  Is your year going the direction you thought it would by now?

Studies show that by the end of January, 40% of all New Year’s resolutions will have been tossed aside.  And that number jumps to 75% just one week into February!

It’s amazing how easy it is to come up with things about our lives that we want to change and yet how hard it is to actually change them!

Why is that?  Why can’t we keep our resolutions?  Why can’t we make those changes that we know we need to make?

Did you know that...

  • ...95% of those who lose weight on a diet regain it, and a significant percentage gain back more than they originally?
  • ...even after a heart attack, 6 out of every 7 patients DO NOT make any enduring changes around eating or exercise?
  • ...the average person makes the same New Year’s resolution 10 separate times without success?

The One Thing You Need to Make 2017 Great

December 28, 2016

Merry Christmas everyone!  I know Christmas was three days ago but it seems like the party’s just ending now.  I think because it fell on a weekend, this year’s Christmas felt more like a week-long event as opposed to just one day.

And in case you’re wondering how I spent that week, below are a few of the many highlights from an action-packed week:

  • I took Michael to his first ever Redskins game on Monday night.  After four hours in 26 degree weather, we were each wondering how many toes we had left because we simply couldn’t feel any of them.
  • I spent five hours in a shopping mall with my wife and kids as we divided up and did our Christmas shopping all at the same time.  It’s probably been since the late 1980's since I last purchased an item from a mall.  No joke.
  • I turned into the “hostess with the mostess” as Marianne and I invited close friends or family members over to our home 4 times in a 5 day period.  For a family of introverts like us, that’s record-breaking!

    My Word for 2016 Is…

    January 6, 2016

    SOLDIER!

Yep, that’s right.  Soldier.  I’ve never served in the military but I’m a solider nonetheless.  I’m a soldier in the army of God.

I am not a civilian or a bystander; I am not called to sit on the sidelines.  I am called to fight.  I am called to lead.  I am called to build.  I have been entrusted and equipped to be on the front lines in the service of my commanding officer…the King of kings and Lord of lords…Christ Jesus the Lord.

    I am a soldier.  That’s my word for 2016.

Where Will You Be At the End of 2014?

    January 9, 2014

One week into 2014 and by now, statistics say that 60% of New Year’s resolutions have already been abandoned.  And by the end of January, that total will reach almost 90%!  WOW!

But it doesn’t have to be that way – at least not for you.  You don’t have to be part of the 90%.  You can make 2014 different.  Believe me, I struggle with New Year’s resolutions just as much as the next person and I don’t claim to have any secret tricks to make it any easier.  But I have discovered some helpful hints throughout the years that have helped me stay on track.

The most important concept/idea to keep in mind is this (this is a good one to post above your desk or somewhere prominent):

We all end up somewhere, but few people end up somewhere on purpose.

    God's Promise for 2014

    January 2, 2014

Happy New Year!  I hope that 2014 has been good to you thus far and that you’re still going strong on those new year’s resolutions (only 364 more days to go!).

We started a New Year’s tradition at STSA last year and it has quickly become one of my favorites.  What started as “it might be a cool thing to try this year” has quickly turned into “it just wouldn’t be New Year’s without it.”

What is “it”?  RECEIVING OUR NEW YEAR’S PROMISES!

    Humbled by the Almond Tree

    January 11, 2013

Sighh, on the brink of another new year... Naturally, this means I will overanalyze every part of last year and obsessively dwell on unrealized goals, disappointments, or failures.  It feels like God has said “no” to me so many times last year; and not just in the “no, but I’m going to let you down easy” kind of way, but in what feels like the most devastating “no” and lead-up to “no” in the whole world.

But during this year’s annual obsession-fest, God taught me a really cool lesson – I am meant to be an almond tree.  (How obvious!)

The almond tree is a giant tree which grows to be 15 to 20 feet in height.  It is not afraid of the cold and begins to bloom in January, bringing forth beautiful pinkish, white flowers.  During the cold season, the tree provides much needed nectar to the wild bees.  The hard almond actually forms inside a soft, fleshy exterior.  Although the exterior appears to be beautiful, it is unripe, and not preferred; instead, we prefer to eat the strong interior that contains the seed.

Do You Even Remember Your New Year's Resolution?

    March 1, 2012

It’s March 1 and that means that we’re two months into 2012.  Now be honest… have you kept your resolution for 2012?  Be honest.  Are you still doing what you said you’d be doing?  Is your year going the direction you thought it would by now?
