PODCAST: Gaining Inspiration from Vacation

July 16, 2020

"The devil never takes a vacation so priests shouldn’t either.”

That’s something I used to hear - and tell myself - early on in my priesthood. But I’ve since repented and changed my ways. I’ve “seen the light” and realized that getting rest for your soul, your body and your spirit is an essential element of being an effective leader.

Besides, why would I want to make the devil my role model in any area of life :)

In this month’s episode of Bringing An Ancient Faith to a Modern World, I share about my recent vacation and talk about why you might want to consider taking one yourself - especially if you’re in a position of leadership.

3 Things I’ve Learned about Leadership

November 7, 2019

I know it’s hard to believe, but I’ll soon be completing my 18th year of priesthood (I guess that makes me an ADULT PRIEST now). I feel like 18 years is enough of a milestone where I can now officially “look back” and “reflect” on some lessons I’ve learned over the years. I feel wiser and more distinguished already!

I’ve noticed a lot of discussion recently about the topic of leadership.  What makes a good leader?  Can leadership be learned?  What are some do’s and don’ts of leadership?

The Best Advice on Leadership I’ve Ever Heard

February 6, 2019

I’m talking leadership today and those who’ve followed me over the years know that I don’t do that very often – not because I don’t think it’s an important topic, but rather because I don’t feel particularly qualified in that area.

When I think of great leaders, I think of people who started movements and changed the world with their forward-thinking vision. When I think of myself, I think of a guy just struggling to figure out what to preach for this week’s sermon.

Great leaders are the guys who know what they’re doing – the guys who got it all figured out. Great leaders are the ones who have all the answers.  Right???

Confessions of a Bible Powercouple, Part 2 - Ahab and Jezebel

February 4, 2019

We’re in Part 2 of our series on Confessions of a Bible Powercouple and this week we’re looking at one of the most common dynamics in marriage today: the PASSIVE husband and the CONTROLLING wife.

By looking at the story of Ahab and Jezebel, we see how that dynamic might play out and the results of neglecting to STEP IN to the role that God designed us for.

How I’m Reading MORE in 2018

January 24, 2018

“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers.”  Harry Truman

Year after year, among the most common New Year’s resolutions is to “read more books.”  It’s right up there with “eat better”, “exercise more” and “spend less.”  It’s a goal that I’ve personally set many times in the past, with limited success.

NOT THIS YEAR!

This year, I turned “read more books in 2018” into “read 15 books in 2018” and you’ll be happy to know that I’m currently on track to more than DOUBLE my goal!  I’ve already completed 2 books and should have a third complete by the end of January – putting me on pace to complete 36 books by the end of year.

Leadership Question #2: WILL THIS GET ME CLOSER?

June 8, 2016

I’m talking leadership again today and this week I want to share the 2nd MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION when it comes to be being a great leader.

Last week, I said that the #1 question is “what would a GREAT LEADER do?”  Or what would a great PARENT do?  Or what would a great FRIEND do?  Or what would a great SERVANT OF GOD do?  Whatever the context may be, find someone you consider to be “great” in that area and ask yourself “what would that person do in this situation?”

That was question #1.

Get Ready for MOMENTUM 2013

January 22, 2013

What am I excited about in 2013?  In a word…MOMENTUM.  Why?  Because momentum is unstoppable!

s we kick off 2013 and everyone hurries to set goals and make resolutions, I want to share what God has been speaking to me about for the coming year.  My vision and my goals for 2013 can best be summarized by 5 words which were tweeted during the first minutes of 2013 by one of my newfound heroes in life – Robert Griffin III (aka RG3):  “Happy New Year!!!  You ain't seen nothing yet!!!”

I love that!  That’s perfect.  That is exactly what God has been revealing to me for the past several days (minus the improper grammar of course) about what this coming year has in store:

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”  1 Corinthians 2:9

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us”  Ephesians 3:20

“You ain’t seen nothing yet!!!” (@RGIII 1/1/13)

What I Learned from Last Night’s Presidential Debate

October 4, 2012

“This is fascinating!”  That’s what I told my wife when she came downstairs at 10:00 last night and saw me sitting in front of the television watching the Presidential debate between President Obama and Governor Romney.  It must have been captivating to keep me awake that late; but I couldn’t resist.  It was “must-see” TV.

I wasn’t coming downstairs to watch the debate – to be honest, I didn’t even know there was a debate.  I don’t really follow the news and I especially don’t follow politics.  To me, “watching the news” means the latest edition of SportsCenter and “the debate” means watching Kornheiser and Wilbon face off on PTI.  That’s the extent of my knowledge of current events.

But I couldn’t resist last night.  It was scintillating stuff.  The way these guys were able to address one another face to face was great.  You really got to see not just what each candidate is proposing on paper (which I wouldn’t understand anyway), but rather how each candidate thinks.  To me, that is infinitely more important.  Why?  Because "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7).
