Being God’s favourite

June 15, 2018

Having a twin sister, for many people I am “one out of two”, sometimes I am “the other one”, but often just “one of the twins”. Don’t get me wrong, I love my sister, but it’s also human of me to wish to be seen as the one independent person I am and to be loved as such.

Now I realized that many people feel the same way. We feel like we’re just “one of …”. We feel like we’re just “one of the church-goers”, “one in the group”. Some people feel like they’re only “the brother of …”, “the mother of …”, “the friend of …”. We often feel like we’re just “one out of many” and this hurts, because when we love in a special way, we want to be loved back in a special way too.

Now for the good news.

Different Doesn't Mean Wrong; It Just Means Different

August 23, 2017

Below is a post I wrote at the start of this year and given the current state of our nation, I thought might be relevant today.  Its message is one that I believe is at the core of our Christian faith (and our national identity as well).  I pray that one by one, more and more people in our country - especially within the Church - would see DIFFERENT doesn't mean WRONG.  It just means different.

----------------------------

Can two people think differently and BOTH be right?  Is that possible?

One thinks we should open our borders; another thinks we should close them.
One thinks we should help the poor; another thinks we should hold them accountable.
One thinks we should focus on evangelism; another thinks we need more Bible study.

Can they both be right?  Or does someone have to be wrong?

Our Father, The Painter

November 22, 2016

Understanding the concept of "The Father" can be bewildering. The challenge is being able to separate YOUR father from OUR Father.

If you think of how you came to be, there's a good chance that within your parents’ grand design there was a child.  But what they couldn't design was how you would turn out: the color of your hair, the width of your smile, the sound of your voice… these were all things that weren’t within their control.

But when God added you to His grand design, every inch of you was intentional: the color of your hair, the width of your smile, even the sound of your voice.

One Size Doesn't Fit All - Finding Your Flavor Part 1

October 11, 2016

Kicked off a brand new series this Sunday and let me tell you:  I AM PUMPED!!!  I’ve been waiting for this series since the start of the year and it’s finally here!

It's called FINDING YOUR FLAVOR and the premise is this:  there may be One Way to God (that is Jesus Christ), but there are many ways to the Way.

In other words, your way of drawing near to God doesn’t have to look exactly like mine.  There’s no “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to the spiritual life.  The ways of drawing near to God could be as varied as we are unique.

Trust me.  This one could be a lifelong game-changer.

Who Am I?

January 22, 2016

I am a father’s child, a mother’s child, yet no one’s son...who am I?

It may only take a moment to solve this riddle. However, in times of loneliness, as a sense of defeat creeps upon us and we feel we are of diminishing value, invisible to others, we need to identify our personhood. We need to examine this question: who am I?

Faithful Stewardship

April 11, 2013

“Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful.”  1 Corinthians 4:2

I always wondered why the Bible says that.  Why is faithfulness the one thing that is explicitly listed as a requirement for “servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God” (1 Corinthians 4:1).  Why not love?  Or patience?  Or kindness?  Why not the ability to recite all the books of the Bible in order or memorize the most verses?  WHY FAITHFUL???

The key to this passage is understanding what a steward is – someone who was given something and asked to take care of it.  If you read the rest of the chapter, St. Paul makes it clear that he doesn’t think highly of himself or what he has accomplished.  He says that we are just stewards – not people who accomplished a lot, but people who received a lot.  In other words, all of us are just like little orphan Annie – we got lucky and hit the jackpot when God adopted us into His family.

But as a member of His family, there are certain expectations.  And those expectations center around faithfulness.  What must I do to remain in good standing in the house of our heavenly Big Daddy Warbucks?  I must do whatever I am asked to do.
