The Poverty of Loneliness

June 20, 2018

“What’s the poorest country you’ve ever been to?”  That question was once famously asked to Mother Theresa by an American reporter in the 1970’s.  Her response?

“I have been to many countries and seen much poverty and suffering. Everywhere I go people tell me of their hardships and struggles, and ask for help, and I give what I can. But of all the countries I have been to, the poorest one I have been to is America.”

Obviously unprepared for such an answer, the reporter informed Mother Teresa that America was one of the richest countries in the world and questioned why she said it was the poorest.  “Because”, she replied, “America suffers most from the poverty of loneliness.”

That was close to 40 years ago.  What do you think she’d say today?

Tall, Dark & Lonely

December 11, 2015

Roses are red, I have a phone, nobody texts me, forever alone.

Loneliness is familiar to us all. The loneliness of those estranged from loved ones, those who work or study in isolation, or those who are socially outcast. The loneliness of a man sitting across the dinner table from his wife unable to convey his feelings, the loneliness of a family sitting in front of the television incapable of sharing their dreams, or the loneliness of a commuter on the subway surrounded by the silence of other commuters staring at each other’s shoes.

Loneliness is a universal human experience.

Solitude or Loneliness?

February 28, 2014

Whether in a crowd or alone, married or single, young or old – everyone experiences loneliness from time to time. It’s okay to admit it. I mean, who among us hasn’t felt this way before?  It sounds so negative (and it feels that way sometimes!), but I am here to say that I believe loneliness is something positive that God uses to knock on our door.

It’s natural for us to want to fill the gap that loneliness creates.  The question is, are we filling it with the RIGHT things?  We pursue relationships, wealth, fame, busyness, shopping :) , etc.  While these may help alleviate the feeling for a while, avoidance is not healthy.  Deep down, we know that nothing can fill the void within us permanently, except the One who made us, as the quote above says.

The World's Original Problem

September 18, 2013

Trivia question - what was the first “problem” that ever existed in the world?  The first dilemma that man had to solve?

a)  Rush hour traffic
b)  Long lines at the DMV
c)  In-laws
d)  Loneliness and lack of relationship

If you guessed D, you are correct!

Look no further than the second chapter in the Bible and you’ll see that before there were wars and disasters and violence and diseases – all the things that came as a result of sin – there was another problem...LONELINESS.

“And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone.”  (Genesis 2:18)

Keep in mind that at the time, everything was good in the world.  No problems.  No pain.  No sickness.  No unemployment.  No fighting.  No construction on the Beltway during rush hour.  Everything was just "good".
