Are You Sure You’re on the Right Road?

January 22, 2020

“If a person is wrong about being right with God, then ultimately it really doesn’t matter what he is right about.”

About 15 years ago, a friend of mine and I set out on a road trip to visit another friend who lived about three hours away.  The route to get there was fairly simple; it was one highway the entire way.  Neither of us owned a GPS at the time, but we didn’t need one.  We had something just as good… MAPQUEST!

The directions were clear and straightforward: take Route 50 for 140 miles, then once you hit a city called Westover, MD, the destination will be on your right after ½ mile.

Simple.  Straightforward.  A piece of cake.  What could go wrong?

Well… to make a long story short…SOMETHING WENT WRONG!

If Today Was Your Last Day...

December 16, 2016

The following guest post is written by Youssef Iskander - a high school student living just outside Toronto, Canada.  Despite being young in age, Youssef presents a profound viewpoint on the recent bombing that took place at a Coptic church in Cairo.  Very wise for an 11th grader!  If you too are interested in guest posting on my blog, please visit my Guest Post guidelines for more info.

This past Sunday, multiple people were killed as part of an attack on the St. Peter Church in St. Mark's Cathedral in Egypt. I don't know exact number of casualties as many are still in hospitals and their life still at risk.

Why is this relevant to us?

Are You Ready to See the Judge?

April 23, 2013

When I was a child, I used to love getting asked the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  I loved it because the answer to that question was never the same.  Like most kids, I was constantly changing my mind about what I wanted to be one day (and believe me, I still haven’t figured it out what I’m going to be when all is said and done).

But I remember that there was a long period where I really wanted to be a lawyer.  That was my dream.  Coincidentally, this happened to be right around the time of A FEW GOOD MEN – the Hollywood hit starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson.  Man I loved that movie!

(even more coincidental was the fact that I also wanted to be an Navy pilot after seeing TOP GUN – the original Tom Cruise classic – where Maverick and Goose stole all of our hearts.  “I feel the need…for speed.  Whoa!”  What can I say.  We all have our little quirks.  Mine is Tom Cruise movies.  Judge not, lest ye be judged.)

Ignorance Is Not An Excuse

October 5, 2012

When I was in high school one of my teachers had a poster up in her classroom with the phrase “Ignorance is Not an Excuse in the Court of Law.” At the time I had high hopes of becoming a lawyer.  And even though my career took a turn when I learned that law school was three years, the phrase stuck with me.

The official legal term is “Ignorantia Juris Non Excusat,” and in my loose legal translation it essentially means that people cannot claim ignorance as an excuse to do something illegal.  I have been thinking about this lately as I have been feeling convicted about the faith and the Bible which I claim so fervently to love.

I can picture Judgment Day and going up to the Throne of God and attempting to claim my ignorance of His Law as the reason for my disobedience. I then imagine laughter infiltrating the depths of Heaven. I grew up in a home where we had about 4 Bibles per capita, access to countless sermons (in HD), books available on order, and Google. I’ve had parents and a plethora of teachers willing to listen to the questions I’ve had and answer them with research and deep consideration. All these thoughts brought me back to “Ignorantia Juris Non Excusat.”  I really have no excuse.
