Untold Stories, Part 3 - IRENAEUS

February 25, 2019

We’re going back in time this week and putting the finishing touches on the series UNTOLD STORIES: Forgotten Fathers of the Faith. We started this series way back in December, but had to cut it short due to some untimely snow days.

But we put the finishing touches on it yesterday as we looked at the life of IRENAEUS OF LYONS. - an unsung hero of the faith who was one of the first church fathers to address the issue of the Bible: what belongs in it (canon) and how should we understand it (covenant).

What Do You See When You Look at a Rainbow?

May 23, 2014

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”  (Genesis 9:12-16)

I read this promise and I see grace and mercy. I see kindness and love. I see a Maker so desperate to save His creation. When Noah built an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings to the Lord after the flood the Bible says:

"The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done." (Genesis 8:21)

Read that verse again.  Close your eyes and see it. Visualize your Maker smelling the pleasing aroma of your prayer… look at the expression on His face as He looks at you full of pride, compassion and love.
