Simply Amazing

“Immediately, when they saw Him, all the people were GREATLY AMAZED, and running to Him, greeted Him.” Mark 9:15

Ever notice how many times the gospel says that Jesus AMAZED the crowds?  Or that everyone was ASTONISHED by His words?  Ever count the number of times that Jesus performed a miracle and it says that all the crowds MARVELED when they saw it?

From start to finish, Jesus led a truly AMAZING life.  There weren’t too many dull days with Him around.  One day healing the sick; the next day feeding the multitudes.  One day preaching in parables; the next day casting out demons.  He was a Teacher and a Preacher; a Comforter and a Counselor.  He was all things to all men.  But apparently not everyone was impressed.

One time, in Matthew 12, Jesus performed one of His typically amazing miracles when He ran into a man who was a) blind, b) mute, and c) demon-possessed.

“Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw.  And all the multitudes were amazed and said, 'Could this be the Son of David?'"  Matthew 12:22-23

Truly amazing!  Three miracles in an instant!  From total misery to new life in the blink of an eye.  What could be more amazing?!  But some didn’t see it that way…

“Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”  Matthew 12:24

It’s scary to think that at some point in time I might reach a point where I am no longer amazed by Jesus.  How could these Pharisees be so blind?  How could they miss something so obvious?  How could anyone witness this great miracle and NOT be amazed?

Before you ask those questions to the Pharisees, maybe you should ask yourself?  When was the last time you were amazed by the work of God in your life?  When was the last time you ran to your neighbor and said “you’ll never believe what God just did in my life!”  When was the last time you fell to your knees and said “God, You are truly amazing!  I thank You and I worship You forever!”

There isn’t a day that goes by where our God isn’t working in an amazing way – in my life and in yours.  Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean that it isn’t there.  Maybe it just means that you aren’t looking for it.  Why?  Because we find what we look for.

For example, let’s say I come home today and think to myself “man, I really have the best wife in the whole wide world.  There is no luckier guy on the planet than me.”  When I come home, I will surely be able to find one or two reasons to validate that belief – a nice fresh meal, a understanding heart, or my favorite is a big huge smile.  If I'm looking for it, that's what I'll see.

But if I come home and think “my wife is great, but I really wish she was more like _______.”  If that is in your head, you’ll come and instantly your eyes will turn to the area where your wife is not like that person.  Your eyes will naturally turn to where your thoughts are leading them.

Same is true with God.  Why do we miss out on the amazing works of God?  Why can’t we see them?  Why is that our eyes are only able to see what’s lacking in my life and what God is NOT doing for me?

Simple.  WE FIND WHAT WE LOOK FOR.  Our God is truly an amazing God and there is none like Him – who alone does great wonders and is worthy of all honor and praise.

The issue isn't whether or not our God is amazing; the issue is whether or not you can see it or not.
